Later Start Date for Matilda the Musical
The Show is Now Set to Begin Previews at the Cambridge Theatre Seven Days Later than Planned
There has been a slight change of plan regarding the upcoming production of “Matilda The Musical”, a show that wowed audiences at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon when it appeared there earlier this year. The show was due to begin previews at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre on Tuesday 18th October 2011 but this has been pushed back to Tuesday 25th October 2011.
The reason has been cited as the extensive installation work required to put the show together and it means that those that booked tickets for the first five previews will be required to re-book and be refunded. The production is still set to begin its official run on Thursday 24th November 2011, two days after the original date, though the initial booking period still extends to Sunday 12th February 2012.
“Matilda the Musical” focuses on the eponymous little girl from Roald Dahl’s famous book and has been provided with a book by Dennis Kelly with Australian comedian Tim Minchin providing the music. Bertie Carvel, Paul Kaye, Josie Walker and Lauren Ward are among the cast members taking to the stage.
The plot follows Matilda, a girl that possesses extraordinary powers of intellect and uses these to her advantage until she also finds herself with supernatural psychokinetic powers. At first she uses her real-world powers to ensure that those that do bad things are punished and she is about to sniff out wrongdoers instantly. She also manages to read every single book in the kids’ section of the local library. Eventually she finds her supernatural powers and this helps her to force people to behave at school.
Other cast members in the production include Marc Antolin, Verity Bentham, Michael Kent, Melanie La Barrie, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Nick Searle, Emily Shaw, Peter Howe, Matthew Clark, Leanne Pinder, Rachel Moran, Lucy Thatcher, Tim Walton and Gary Watson.
“Matilda the Musical” arrives at the Cambridge Theatre following the closure of the long running show “Chicago”, which closed its doors on Saturday 27th August 2011. Like productions such as “We Will Rock You” it had attracted large audiences for many years.
“Matilda the Musical” will replace it with a run that begins on Thursday 24th November 2011 (previews begin on Tuesday 25th October 2011) and initially runs to Sunday 12th February 2012.
