Lend Me A Tenor Closing Early at the Gielgud Theatre
The Musical Version of Ken Ludwig’s Play Set to Close in August, 3 Months Earlier than Planned
Recently, whenever the Gielgud Theatre has been in the news it has been in relation to the anticipated upcoming production of “The Ladykillers”, which is set to open in December with “Father Ted” writer Graham Linehan penning the script. Today, however, it is the turn of the current production to step into the limelight, although the news concerning this show – “Lend Me a Tenor the Musical” – is not as positive. It has announced that it will be closing its doors early in August, despite its planned booking period that took it to November.
Despite stars in the form of Matthew Kelly and Joanna Riding heading to the stage, in addition to a script that took its cues from Ken Ludwig’s play “Lend Me a Tenor”, the show has failed to find the audience it requires to maintain its stay in the West End. It means that having opened its doors in June the show will bow out on 6th August 2011. There is not yet any word on the production that would replace it, but it is likely that word will emerge shortly.
“Lend Me a Tenor the Musical” takes audiences to Ohio in the 1930s where we are introduced to the character of Tito Merelli, a renowned tenor who is preparing to perform in Otello for a fundraiser. But events conspire to turn the evening upside down, so as the audience waits for the show to start an autograph seeking fan causes both a case of mistaken identity and a case of mistaken infidelity, creating chaos behind the scenes.
Matthew Kelly is a well known actor who remains best known for his work in the ITV game show “Stars in their Eyes”. However, he has since returned to the world of acting and this has seen him receive widespread acclaim. He earned a Laurence Olivier Award for his appearance in “Of Mice and Men” at the Savoy Theatre in 2003 and, more recently, he appeared in “Waiting for Godot” at the Haymarket Theatre in 2010.
London theatre audiences will have until Saturday 6th August 2011 to catch the well-received “Lend Me a Tenor the Musical” at the Gielgud Theatre.
