Ian Talbot to Direct Brandon Thomas’s Play from September Following Gavin & Stacey Co-Star’s Win at Tony Awards

Only days after his “Gavin & Stacey” co-star James Corden took home a Tony Award for “One Man, Two Guvnors” on Broadway (it’s also in the West End), Mathew Horne has been revealed to be heading to the Menier Chocolate Factory to appear in a new production of “Charley’s Aunt”. The production is a revival of Brandon Thomas’s classic play and will appear at the venue from September with Ian Talbot taking on directing duties.

The production was originally announced in March alongside additional parts of the ongoing Menier Chocolate Factory season, which includes the “Torch Song Trilogy”, which is currently on its stage, and “Merrily We Roll Along”, which appears in November. Other than Horne the full cast is yet to be announced, though his appearance in the production should attract considerable attention thanks to his numerous television credits alongside James Corden. Considering past successes at the Menier it would also be worth keeping an eye on the show as it could follow in the footsteps of “La Cage Aux Folles” and others and head to the West End at a later date.

Mathew Horne is an actor and comedian whose best known work has been alongside James Corden with credits like “Gavin & Stacey”, their short-lived sketch show “Horne & Corden” and their movie “Lesbian Vampire Killers”. His other credits include “Doc Martin”, “Roman’s Empire”, “Robin Hood”, “The Catherine Tate Show” and “Teachers”. He is also known thanks to a previous London theatre credit, which saw him appear alongside Imelda Staunton in Joe Orton’s famous play “Entertaining Mr Sloane” at Trafalgar Studios 1 in 2009.

In “Charley’s Aunt” the focus is on Charley as he waits for his Aunt Dona Lucia to arrive from Brazil who will act as a chaperone for him and his friend Jack to propose to their partners. But when she does not arrive they are in a spot of bother, forcing them to take drastic measures to ensure their proposals go ahead: they blackmail their friend Lord Fancourt Babberly (Horne) into posing as her.

“Charley’s Aunt” is at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Monday 1st October 2012 (previews from Thursday 20th September 2012) to Saturday 10th November 2012.
