The Royal Shakespeare Company Musical Lands Awards in Two Categories at the Annual Event

The result of an awards ceremony emerged over the weekend, with “Matilda The Musical” among the shows that landed accolades. The Royal Shakespeare Company production earned the prize for Best Musical Production and Best Performance in a Musical (Bertie Carvel) for its run at the Courtyard Theatre, which is good news for the show ahead of its official opening at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre, which is set to take place late in November (previews began last week).

In addition to “Matilda the Musical” there were other winners such as Derek Jacobi in “King Lear” at the Donmar Warehouse (Best Performance in a Play), “Richard III” & “The Comedy Of Errors” (Best Touring Production), the Lyric Hammersmith (Achievement in Marketing Award), Shakespeare’s Globe (Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre) and Sir Pet Hall (The Stage Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre).

Additional prizes went to shows around the United Kingdom such as “The Pride” at the Crucible, Sheffield, “Love, Love, Love” at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, “White” at the Theatre Royal, Bath, “Happy Days” at Sheffield Studio, “The Passion” for The National Theatre, Wales and “Cinderella”.

“Matilda the Musical” follows the plot of Roald Dahl’s famous book, with the girl of the title possessing extraordinary powers of intellect, which she uses to teach people lessons. During the course of the show she reads every single book in the kids’ section of the local library and sniffs out wrongdoers at every turn. Eventually, her powers of intellect are joined by psychokinetic powers, which she is able to use to make people behave at school.

The show received critical acclaim during its run at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and talk quickly turned to either a West End or Broadway version emerging in the near future. That turned out to be the London theatre show at the Cambridge Theatre, which retains the creative team of Matthew Warchus (director), Tim Minchin (music), Dennis Kelly (book) and actors Paul Kaye, Bertie Carvel, Lauren Ward and Josie Walker.

“Matilda the Musical” begins its run at the Cambridge Theatre on Tuesday 22nd November 2011 (previews begin on Tuesday 25th October 2011) and has an initial booking period that takes it to Sunday 12th February 2012.
