Matilda the Musical Confirmed for West End's Cambridge Theatre

Friday, 20th May 2011

The Show Set to Open in November Following the Closure of Chicago in August 2011

It had previously been indicated that “Matilda the Musical”, which had originally been running at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, would be transferring to the West End in the near future. The news was of little surprise following the positive word-of-mouth for the production and now confirmation has emerged, along with the cast for the production and details of which West End venue will receive it – the Cambridge Theatre.

The show will land at the venue following the closure of the long-running “Chicago” in August. The musical has been running there since April 2006 and there is still chance, according to producers, for the show to find a new home.

In “Matilda” we follow the exploits of the title character – a girl that has extraordinary powers – and throughout the piece we witness her use these skills to put people in their place. With great intelligence she reads the books she wants to whilst her powers also allow her to carry out punishments on her parents, reversing the trend of parents punishing their children for misbehaving. It ran at the Courtyard Theatre until January of this year with a book by Dennis Kelly and comedian Tim Minchin providing the music and lyrics.

As well as the venue of the show the cast has also been confirmed, with many returning players from the Courtyard Theatre. Amongst them is actor and comedian Paul Kaye as Mr Wormwood. Best known for portraying the character of Dennis Pennis, Kaye has since appeared in television shows like “Hotel Babylon”, “Pulling”, “Mongrels” and “Inspector George Gently”, in addition to appearances in shows such as the long-running soap “EastEnders”. He stepped into the role of Mr Wormwood in November 2010.

The rest of the cast includes Bertie Carvel, Lauren Ward and Josie Walker, as well as Marc Antolin, Melanie La Barrie, Verity Bentham, Michael Kent, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Nick Searle, Emily Shaw.

Chicago runs at the Cambridge Theatre until 27th August 2011. “Matilda the Musical” then runs at the venue from Tuesday 22nd November 2011 (previews from Tuesday 18th October 2011) to Sunday 12th February 2012.
