The Jukebox Musical Sets New Closing Dates for Mid-January 2012

Just as one jukebox musical officially opens its doors in the West End (“Rock Of Ages” at the Shaftesbury Theatre) another one announces early closing dates. It has been revealed that “Million Dollar Quartet”, a show that explores legendary join recordings of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, will be closing its doors at the Noël Coward Theatre in January 2012. This is despite a booking extension, announced in July, which was to take the show to Saturday 27th October 2012.

“Million Dollar Quartet” takes audiences back to the 1950s to the fateful meeting between the four musicians in a recording studio in Memphis.  Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins all found themselves together under the same roof and recorded music together – something that would go down in history as one of the first rock supergroups under the title “Million Dollar Quartet”. The show features music from the back catalogues of various well known rock n’ roll stars of the era and has previously entertained those with Theatre Tickets on the other side of the Atlantic.

Actors in the production include Michael Malarkey as Elvis Presley, Ben Goddard as Jerry Lee Lewis, Derek Hagen as Johnny Cash, Oliver Seymour Marsh as Carl Perkins, Francesca Jackson as Dyanne and Bill Ward as Sun Records boss Sam Phillips.

Bill Ward is an actor who has appeared in west end shows and well known television programmes, with the former category including “Monty Python’s Spamalot” at the Palace Theatre and “The Lion King” at the Lyceum Theatre. For television, audiences might recognise him from the likes of “Coronation Street” (from 2003 to 2007, playing Charlie Stubbs), “Doctors”, “Robin Hood” and “Heartbeat”, among other shows.

No show has been announced as a replacement for “Million Dollar Quartet” as of yet, though the production will continue at The Venue through to January, meaning that Christmas audiences will be able to catch it before it bows out of London.

“Million Dollar Quartet” is at the Noel Coward Theatre until Saturday 14th January 2012.
