Omid Djalili in What The Butler Saw at the Vaudeville Theatre
Comedian Returns to the West End Stage Following His Stint in Oliver the Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009
Three years ago it was announced that comedian Omid Djalili would be heading to the stage of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane to portray Fagin in the production of “Oliver the Musical”. At the time he was one of many comedians to take on the iconic role in the production, with Rowan Atkinson, Russ Abbot and Griff Rhys Jones also taking the step.
Now it has been revealed that Djalili will be making his way to a London theatre again as he stars in Joe Orton’s comedy “What the Butler Saw” at the Vaudeville Theatre.
Djalili will portray Dr Rance in the production, the story of Dr Prentice’s psychiatric practice and the chaos that ensues as he attempts to hire a new secretary. During his interview with Geraldine Barclay he attempts to seduce her and asks her to undress as part of the process, meaning that she has to hide when his wife arrives, having offered the job to her seducer and blackmailer Nicholas Beckett. The chaos escalates as the play progresses, eventually leading to a government inspection carried out by Rance.
The production is a classic one that first made its way to the stage of the Queen’s Theatre in 1969. It is remembered fondly, just like Orton’s other works like “Entertaining Mr Sloane”, which last appeared at Trafalgar Studios 1 in 2009.
Djalili has appeared in a wide range of television shows and movies over the years, making him a well known name in the British comedy scene. His television credits include “Have I Got News for You”, “Black Books”, “The Omid Djalili Show” and “The Paul Reiser Show”, whilst his film credits include “The Mummy”, “Gladiator”, Bond film “The World is Not Enough”, “Notting Hill” and “Pirates of the Caribbean III”. Meanwhile, he has also made his way to the stage on various occasions and in addition to “Oliver the Musical” he has brought shows to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and recently completed a UK tour.
“What the Butler Saw” is at the Vaudeville Theatre from Wednesday 16th May 2012 (previews from Friday 4th May 2012) to Saturday 25th August 2012.
