Company - Gielgud Theatre

The big news coming out of the West End today takes us to the Gielgud Theatre, a venue that is currently the home of The Ferryman. But instead of Jez Butterworth’s latest play landing in the news it is a show set to open next September.

Company, the celebrated Stephen Sondheim musical first seen in 1970, will play at the venue with a new spin authorised by the man himself. Instead of single man Bobby, the show will see its genders reversed so that we focus on Bobbi played by acclaimed actress Rosalie Craig.

Meanwhile, a Broadway icon steps into the role of Joanne, with Patti LuPone returning to the West End. This ensures that this is a must-see production and with a whole year between announcement and first performance there is plenty of time for anticipation to build.

Company is going to be the latest show from Elliot Harper Productions, a new company set up by Marianne Elliot, who directs, and Chris Harper, producer. Their show, Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle, plays at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2017 and they also present The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, this year.

For Company the focus is on singleton Bobbi and through a series of vignettes we will explore her relationships with five married couples, with these small episodes also boasting various musical numbers. They range from title track Company to others like The Ladies Who Lunch, The Little Things You Do Together and more.

The show has been seen on numerous occasions worldwide since it was first staged on Broadway in 1970, including its West End premiere at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1972, and it was last seen on these shores over two decades ago – yet another reason why this show will attract a lot of attention in 2018.

So as The Ferryman, Jez Butterworth’s play about a family in Derry in the 1980s, continues at the Gielgud Theatre, we can now look ahead at the production set to make a big mark in 2018. Company runs at the venue from Wednesday 26th September 2018 to Saturday 22nd December 2018.
