EastEnders Actor Joins the Upcoming Production at Regent’s Park

London theatre audiences heading to the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park will be able to witness a familiar face in the upcoming production of “The Beggar’s Opera” as Phil Daniels has been announced in the role of Mr Lockit. The actor, best known for roles in television and in the Blur song “Parklife”, will be starring alongside David Caves, Tim Frances, Janet Fullerlove, Akiya Henry, Beverly Rudd, Lucie Skeaping and Flora Spencer-Longhurst in the show when it runs from June to July 2011.

Phil Daniels could relatively recently be seen in the ever-popular television series “EastEnders” where he took on the role of Kevin Wick though his long career has seen him occupy a wealth of further role on the stage and screen. In the 1990s he lent his voice to the song “Parklife” by Blur and also starred in the music video to accompany it, whilst other screen credits include “Quadrophenia”, “Chicken Run”, “Time Gentlemen Please” and “Gimme Gimme Gimme”. For the stage he has previously appeared in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” at the Haymarket Theatre and “A Clockwork Orange” for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

“The Beggar’s Opera”, which is to be directed by Lucy Bailey, is a centuries-old production that was first seen by audiences with Theatre Tickets at Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre in 1728 and has since enjoyed great success. Back in its day it was the most successful musical theatre production of all time and it is likely that audiences continue to have an appetite for the story of lies, deceit and highwaymen.

The show is set in the 18th century where we get a look at the Underworld of London from the pen of John Gay. The characters include the Macheath, the highwayman, and his lovers Polly Peachum, our heroine, and Lucy Lockit, her rival. We follow them as a web of lies is woven around them and the fate of Macheath is eventually sealed beneath the gallows in Tyburn.

Other shows appearing as part of the summer season at Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre include “Lord Of The Flies”.

“The Beggar’s Opera” runs at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park from Tuesday 28th June 2011 (previews from Thursday 23rd June 2011) until Saturday 23rd July 2011.
