The Tina Turner Musical - Aldwych Theatre

Over the years we have seen the arrival of various jukebox musicals, some of which continue in the capital – like Thriller Live and Motown the Musical – and others which have sadly come and gone – like We Will Rock You and Sunny Afternoon – but another has been anticipated for some time.

Tina, the musical that celebrates the life of Tina Turner, has been in the making for more than a year, with Turner herself indicating her involvement back in December 2016, but now it has been confirmed that the show will be headed to the Aldwych Theatre under the direction of Phyllida Lloyd in March 2018.

Like various shows celebrating a singer-songwriter icon, the show will delve into their back-story of, with Tina delving into her early years and progressing through her career. Katori Hall’s script (written alongside Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins) will follow her from her debut in 1958 to her huge hits in the following decades.

From chart-topping hits to movie soundtracks, Turner has contributed to it all and has seen her work appear all over the world, landing awards and acclaim along the way. It makes her one of the most iconic recording artists of the 20th century and thusly ensures a large audience for this new show.

And with that in mind it should come as no surprise to find out that Phyllida Lloyd takes on directing duties. The acclaimed theatre and film director has been behind some of the capital’s big success stories, including the long-running Mamma Mia! both on the stage and the big screen. Meanwhile, her other credits include Mary Stuart at the Apollo Theatre, shows like The Duchess Of Malfi at the National Theatre and the film The Iron Lady.

So her work makes her a good fit for Tina as the show comes to London and joins a host of jukebox musicals in the West End.

Tina is set to run at the Aldywch Theatre from Tuesday 17th April 2018 (previews from Wednesday 21st March 2018), with its opening booking period taking it to Saturday 16th June 2018.
