Priscilla Queen of the Desert Confirmed for December Closure

Monday, 5th Sep 2011

The Australian Musical Has Been Running at the Palace Theatre Since March 2009

It had been rumoured back in June that the popular musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” could be performing its final show at the West End’s Palace Theatre in December and today this has been confirmed with New Year’s Eve cited as the closing date of the production starring Ray Meagher and Oliver Thornton. The show has been seen by London theatre audiences since it opened at the venue back in March 2009, following a run in Sydney.

“Priscilla Queen of the Desert” tells the story of a drag act based in Sydney consisting of Mitzi, Bernadette and Felicia as they decide to ditch the bright lights of the city and perform at a Casino in Alice Springs. It will be a new adventure for the trio and they are well versed with city life, but as they head out across the Australian outback they discover romance and friendship along the way, all inside a tatty old bus named Priscilla. The production also features various well known songs and is based on the 1994 movie “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”.

In addition to the trio played by Richard Grieve, Don Gallagher and Oliver Thornton the production also features Mark Moraghan in the role of Bob the Mechanic, who will be replaced by Ray Meagher from Wednesday 5th October 2011. Meagher previously portrayed the part from September 2010 and stepped down in March 2011, only for his return to be announced in June 2011. He is best known to audiences in the United Kingdom for his portrayal of Alf in the long running Australian soap “Home and Away”. His other credits include British pantomimes like “Peter Pan” and “Aladdin”.

The show has been a popular one ever since it opened its doors, with Theatre Tickets selling well and the Laurence Olivier Awards also singing its praises. There is no word yet on what will be replacing the production, but the capital has seen various high profile musicals open this year from “Shrek The Musical” to “Rock Of Ages” and 2012 should be no different.

“Priscilla Queen of the Desert” continues at the Palace Theatre and closes its doors for the final time on Saturday 31st December 2011.
