Rebel Wilson in Guys And Dolls at the Phoenix Theatre
It was only earlier this month that the news emerged that Nigel Lindsay would be playing Nathan Detroit in Guys And Dolls at the Phoenix Theatre. But it appears as though the prohibition-set musical wants to stay in the spotlight as they have now revealed that Rebel Wilson will also be joining the cast this June as she takes on the role of Miss Adelaide.
The Australian performer is better known as a film actor, having appeared in some well known movies like Pitch Perfect. But this summer she will be swapping Hollywood for London’s Phoenix Theatre as her character of miss Adelaide watches Linday’s Detroit as he attempts to make her happy amongst a sea of gangsters, gamblers and more.
She’s not the only well known screen performer appearing in the West End this year of course, with Matthew Perry recently finishing his turn in his own play The End Of Longing and Kit Harrington currently appearing in Doctor Faustus. But this will be a chance to see someone enter the musical theatre world as she performs song from Frank Loesser, Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows.
Nathan Detroit is the man at the centre of Guy And Dolls. He inhabits the dark world of prohibition-era New York and his predicaments are financial and romantic (with Miss Adelaide the fiancé he never seems to marry). Sky Masterson might be the answer to his problems as a wager emerges that he hopes will pay out and set him on the right track.
The musical numbers are perhaps just as well known as the story, with examples like Luck Be A Lady, A Bushel And A Peck, If I Were A Bell and Guys And Dolls, amongst others.
Rebel Wilson, in addition to appearing in the mentioned Pitch Perfect and its sequels, will also be recognisable from roles in the likes of Bridesmaids, Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb and Grimsby, amongst others. This won’t be the first time she has appeared in a stage musical, however, as she also appears in The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl in June.
Rebel Wilson joins Guys And Dolls on 28th June 2016 and remain until mid-August. Meanwhile, Nigel Lindsay currently plays Nathan Detroit and does so until the end of June.
