Riding and Xavier in The Pajama Game at the Shaftesbury Theatre
Joanna Riding and Michael Xavier Appearing in the Chichester Festival Theatre’s West End Transfer from May 2014
The classic musical The Pajama Game is set to make its way to the West End in 2014 in the latest in a long line of transfers from the Chichester Festival Theatre (which, over the years, has included everything from Yes, Prime Minister to Singin’ In The Rain), the show will land at the Shaftesbury Theatre with star Joanna Riding included alongside director Richard Eyre.
As well as Riding, audiences with theatre tickets will also see the newly cast Michael Xavier onstage whilst additional performers are yet to be confirmed. Riding and Xavier will play the characters of Babe Williams and Sid Sorokin, respectively.
Richard Bissell’s novel 7½ Cents was adapted to the stage as The Pajama Game in the 1950s by Bissell himself and George Abbot, whilst the score was penned by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. It went on to be a highly successful show following its Broadway debut in 1954 and would be revived in later decades, wining Tony Awards along the way.
Set in a pajama factory, The Pajama Game focuses on workers as they demand a wage rise of 7½ cents. This is refused by the bosses, causing friction between two people falling in love – Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent, and Babe Williams, representing the workers.
Along the way there are also musical numbers lie I’m Not All In Love, A New Town Is A Blue Town, Hey There, Steam Heat, Think Of The Time I Save and Hernando’s Hideaway, among others.
Joanna Riding has earned Olivier Awards and acclaim during her impressive career, landing two wins in the prestigious ceremony for Carousel at the National Theatre in 1993 and My Fair Lady at the National Theatre in 2003. Her other credits have included The Merry Wives Of Windsor for the Chichester Festival Theatre, The Witches Of Eastwick at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and the upcoming Stephen Ward at the Aldwych Theatre, among others.
The Shaftesbury Theatre welcomes The Pajama Game from Tuesday 13th May 2014 (previews from Thursday 1st May 2014) to Saturday 13th September 2014.
