Robin Cousins in Chicago at the Garrick Theatre
Gold Medallist Joins Chicago for an Olympic Summer Run Beginning in July 2012
The latest casting announcement from the West End is linked to the biggest event on the calendar this year – the London Olympics – as it has been announced that the Olympic Gold Medallist Robin Cousins will be taking on the role of Billy Flynn in “Chicago”. The “Dancing on Ice” judge will be stepping into the role throughout the summer until the beginning of September, meaning he will be appearing onstage throughout the Olympic season.
Robin Cousins had a successful skating career that began at an early age and progressed to his win at the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, in 1980, in addition to further wins and medals at other events. Later he made the transition to the stage and this has seen him take on role in West End shows and beyond. His credits include “The Rocky Horror Show” at the Piccadilly Theatre and “Cats” at the New London Theatre. He has also worked in Pantomime, as a director and as a choreographer, leading to his work as a judge on the television series “Dancing on Ice” from 2006.
“Chicago” is the famous musical based on Maurice Dallas Watkins play of the same name. It focuses on the culture of the celebrity criminal in 1920s Chicago as Roxie Hart is thrown behind bars for the murder of her husband, putting her in the spotlight in a way that’s contrary to her dreams. On the inside she meets Velma Kelly, vaudevillian performer who murdered her sister and together they decide that they wish to follow their dreams and seek a life in the spotlight. So after hiring the sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn, they make their bids for freedom.
The last time that “Chicago” was in the news was in December when America Ferrera stepped down from the production alongside Amra-Faye Wright and Darius Campbell. They were then replaced by Sarah Soetaert, Rachel McDowall and Terence Maynard, the latter being replaced by David Bedella currently. He is replaced by Cousins from 17th July 2012 to 8th September 2012.
“Chicago” is at the Garrick Theatre, where it is currently booking until Saturday 26th January 2013.
