Room On The Broom Lands at the Lyric Theatre for West End Return

The Classic Children’s Tale Originally Appeared at the Garrick Theatre in 2010

It has been revealed that the classic children’s show “Room On The Broom” is set to return to the West End at the end of the year, marking a second time that the Julia Donaldson-penned book has hit the stage (the last time was at the Garrick Theatre in 2010). The production is this time set to land at the Lyric Theatre for a run beginning in November and continuing to January 2013.

It will mean that it will appear on the same stage as another of Donaldson’s shows, “The Gruffalo”, which appeared at the venue during the previous Christmas season. There is no indication, as yet, whether or not “Room on the Broom” will go up against this show if the former appears at another venue during the same period.

“Room on the Broom” is a different beast to “The Gruffalo” and focuses on a witch and her cat. When a ferocious wind causes her to lose her hat, wand and bow during one night in the sky, she must enlist the help of a dog, a frog and a bird to retrieve them, all whilst a dragon is out to get them. The cast includes Morag Cross, Sam Donovan and David Garrud.

Julia Donaldson is a writer whose children’s books have made her enormously popular, allowing her to become the Children’s Laureate in 2011 (a title she holds until next year). Her credits include “The Gruffalo”, “The Gruffalo’s Child”, “Postman Bear”, “The Snail and the Whale”, “Tyrannosaurs Drip”, “Stick Man”, “Tabby McTat” and “Jack and the Flumflum Tree”. She often works with illustrator Axel Scheffler, who helped her bring to life the likes of “The Gruffalo”, “Room on the Broom” and “Stick Man” among others.

This Christmas season is also set to feature an array of other shows suitable for children, from the pantomime “Aladdin – A Wish Come True” at The Theatre at the O2 to the likely return of “The Snowman” at the Peacock Theatre. “The Tiger Who Came To Tea” is also set to appear prior to then during the summer months.

“Room on the Broom” is at the Lyric Theatre from Wednesday 21st November 2012 to Sunday 13th January 2013.
