Rowan Atkinson in Quartermaine’s Terms at the Wyndham’s Theatre
Comic Actor Will Appear in the Revival of Simon Gray’s Well Known Comedy in the West End
In a day that has seen various big announcements in the West End it has been revealed that Rowan Atkinson will be making his way back to the theatre district for an appearance in Simon Gray’s well known play “Quartermaine’s Terms” when the production appears at the Wyndham’s Theatre. It will be the first time the comic actor has appeared in the West End since his portrayal of Fagin in “Oliver the Musical” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
“Quartermaine’s Terms” takes us to a Cambridgeshire school that teaches the English language to foreigners where St John Quartermaine (Atkinson) is a very pleasant man, but a completely useless teacher whose loneliness (and the loneliness of those around him) is a dominant theme. In fact he seems not to have any friends outside of the school, which might be why he is always around and always ready to listen to the complaints of those around him. Eventually, his future looks bleak at the arrival of a new principal who views Quartermaine in a different light.
The production is set to land at the Wyndham’s Theatre in January and this will follow appearances in other UK venues the Theatre Royal Brighton and the Theatre Royal Bath.
This being a Simon Gray play, however, means that it is not the first time that audiences have had the opportunity to pick up theatre tickets and witness it take to the stage. It first emerged in the early 1980s and over the years many different versions have emerged, including a BBC version in 1987 and a radio version more recently in 2006.
Rowan Atkinson should attract a sizable audience to the Wyndham’s Theatre when he arrives thanks to a long list of iconic British television programmes that he has take part in. The most famous of these are of course the “Blackadder” series and “Mr Bean”, though other well known roles have been in “Not the Nine O’Clock News” and the movies “Johnny English”, “Johnny English Reborn”, “The Lion King”, “Hot Shots! Part Deux” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. In regards to London theatre roles, he is best known for his appearance as Fagin in “Oliver” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009.
“Quartermaine’s Terms” is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Tuesday 29th January 2013 (previews from Wednesday 23rd January 2013) to Saturday 13th April 2013.
