The Acclaimed Actress Joining the Long Running West End Musical from May 2014
In a week in which Gemma Arterton has been announced as the lead in Made In Dagenham The Musical comes another high profile casting announcement in the West End. The ongoing production of Billy Elliot The Musical – like the former, it is based on a movie – has found a new Mrs Wilkinson in the form of high profile West End star Ruthie Henshall.
Others set to join her in the production from May include Chris Grahamson, Claudia Bradley, David Muscat and Barnaby Meredith.
Billy Elliot The Musical is one of the biggest musicals in the West End, having opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005, and it tells the story of Billy, a boy growing up in a mining town in North East England in the 1980s. It is a time of political and social turbulence as the miners’ strikes take place and against this backdrop we witness Billy as he takes up an unexpected passion – ballet. At first he worries about the reaction – after all, his dad would prefer he take up boxing – but eventually he realises that his family will support in a bid for a place at the Royal Ballet School.
Ruthie Henshall is well known for her West End appearances, which have not only included high profile shows like Cats, but also the likes of Chicago (on multiple occasions – 1998, 2003 and 2009 at the Cambridge Theatre), Blithe Spirit at the Apollo Theatre, The Woman In White at the Palace Theatre and Peggy Sue Got Married at the Shaftesbury Theatre. She is also the recipient of a Laurence Olivier Award for She Love Me at the Savoy Theatre in 1995. It was one of many nominations for the coveted prize, with her most recent in 2009 for Marguerite at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Audiences might also recognise her from her television work with appearances in Wizards Vs. Aliens and Law & Order, among others.
Billy Elliot The Musical continues at the Victoria Palace Theatre with the new cast members joining on Monday 12th May 2014.
