David Thaxton, Fra Lee, Cassidy Janson and Others Also Added to the Cast List of Leonard Bernstein’s Operetta in London

Earlier this month it was revealed that Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, based on Voltaire’s satire, would be making an appearance at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Now a casting announcement has been made concerning the show, which sees Scarlett Strallen’s name appear on the list alongside Fra Lee, David Thaxton and more.

The production is set to appear at the Menier Chocolate Factory from November, following current show The Color Purple and the upcoming The Lyons.

The story of Candide follows the title character as he journeys through loss and happiness alongside various musical numbers – like Make Our Garden Grow. Bernstein’s operetta made it to the stage in the 1950s; two centuries after Voltaire first penned the text that appeared in the 1750s. It is remembered as a highly regarded piece.

Scarlett Strallen is a West End regular and those that appear in the audience will recognise her from a wealth of work. Recently she appeared in the West End version of the Broadway classic A Chorus Line at the London Palladium and prior to that her credits have included Singin’ In The Rain at the Palace Theatre (where she worked with Candide’s choreographer Adam Cooper), Mamma Mia! at the Prince Edward Theatre and Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre. She has also made appearances at the Chichester Festival Theatre and on the other side of the Atlantic on Broadway.

David Thaxton, meanwhile, has appeared in a wealth of shows as well, most notable Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre, Passion at the Donmar Warehouse – which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award in 2011 - and Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre. He has worked all over the country, particularly in his native Wales, where he has performed at venues such as the Wales Millennium Centre.

The rest of the cast of Candide, in addition to those mentioned, includes Carly Anderson, Jeremy Batt, Christopher Jacobsen, Cassidy Janson, Frankie Jenna, Ben Lewis,Rachel Spurrell, Helen Walsh and Matt Wilman.

Candide is at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Monday 2nd December 2013 (previews from Friday 22nd November 2013) to Saturday 22nd February 2014.
