Simon Callow in A Christmas Carol at the Arts Theatre
The Being Shakespeare Actor Set to Appear in the Charles Dickens Classic from December to January
Earlier this year Simon Callow brought his one-man show “Being Shakespeare” to Trafalgar Studios 1 and since then he has debuted his new production “Tuesday at Tescos” to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Today, however, his next venture in London has been revealed, with a starring role in “A Christmas Carol” at the Arts Theatre, where he will take on the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge. It is the latest in a growing list of Christmas productions that have already been announced throughout the year.
“A Christmas Carol” has been seen in the capital on various occasions over the years. Last year Trafalgar Studios was the home of the Horla Theatre Company’s version of the show from December 2010 to January 2011 and the year before that Gareth Hale starred in the Arts Theatre’s version from November 2009 to January 2010. This version is set to be directed by Tom Cairns and will be produced by Riverside Studios and Assembly Festival.
The plot is the famous story of Ebenezer Scrooge, who lives in Victorian London and is a grumpy and unpleasant man who forces his employees to work in Christmas Day. During Christmas night he is visited by three ghosts, including his former business partner Jacob Marley, and he soon sees the errors of his ways.
Simon Callow, as mentioned, was previously seen in “Being Shakespeare” at Trafalgar Studios 1 and prior to that has appeared in a wide variety of productions in the capital, from “Twelfth Night” at The National Theatre in 2011 and “Waiting for Godot” at the Haymarket Theatre in 2009 to “Equus” at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2008. He is also well known for his roles in various movies and television shows, notably “Shakespeare in Love” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.
The production is one of many Christmas shows to be revealed so far, with the annual production of “The Snowman” already lined up for the Peacock Theatre alongside the recently-announced “The Nutcracker” at the Royal Opera House and “Christmas with The Rat Pack” at the Wyndham’s Theatre.
“A Christmas Carol” is at the Arts Theatre from Thursday 8th December 2011 to Saturday 14th January 2012.
