The Co-Creator of The Office Makes His West End Debut in the Richard Bean Revival from July

The Wyndham’s Theatre has been busy this year with announcements of numerous high profile shows starring well known names. One of them will be arriving in July as it has been announced that Stephen Merchant will be stepping into the role of Ted in Richard Bean’s 2002 play The Mentalists.

The production will open in the summer and it arrives follows two other much-talked-about productions. Mark Strong can currently by seen in A View From The Bridge until April and then John Goodman is set to make his way to the venue in David Mamet’s American Buffalo. Both shows are American plays that have made a big impression on audiences over the years, but their latest appearances in the West End will be sure to attract a huge crowd thanks to the onstage talent.

The Mentalists is set at a hotel in Finsbury Park where we meet Ted (Merchant) and Morrie (Steffan Rhodri), two people with a unique affiliation whose isolation in the location is going to cause a lot of tension. These strains cause the details of their arrangement to unravel and they are forced to confront their relationship.

Bean’s play is one of many from the acclaimed writer, whose recent successes include Made in Dagenham The Musical, Great Britain, One Man, Two Guvnors and The Heretic, to name but a few.

Stephen Merchant is a well known name thanks to his affiliation with Ricky Gervais, with whom he has been responsible for some of the most acclaimed British comedies in recent decades. Together they created both The Office and Extras and penned the film Cemetery Junction. Meanwhile, Merchant has also been seen in the likes of Hot Fuzz, The Invention Of Lying, Run Fatboy Run and An Idiot Abroad, amongst others, whilst also lending his voice to the hit video game Portal 2.

The Mentalists, under the direction of Abbey Wright, appears at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Monday 13th July 2015 (previews are set to begin on Friday 3rd July 2015) and will remain there until Saturday 26th September 2015.
