The Gruffalo Set for West End's Lyric Theatre this Christmas

Wednesday, 14th Sep 2011

The Children’s Show Returns to the Capital from November 2011 to January 2012

It is shaping up to be a Christmas tradition to witness “The Gruffalo” in the West End during the seasonal months and 2011-2012 will be no exception as the famous children’s play sets dates from November to January at the Lyric Theatre. It will be the latest opportunity for London theatre audiences to witness the antics of Mouse, the Gruffalo and the predators that are dotted around his adventure in the woods. It will also be the latest opportunity to witness the work of Julia Donaldson, whose book was adapted into the hit play.

“The Gruffalo” follows the character of Mouse as he ventures in a deep dark wood hoping to gather some hazelnuts, at this point oblivious to the encounters he is about to face. When some predators arrive on the scene he is ill-equipped to fight them, being armed only with a nut map and his imagination, but he is able to put this to great use. With the Owl (a retired Woodland Air Force Officer), Fox (a wheeler-dealer) and Snake (a serpent that loves to party) on his tail he concocts a story about a ferocious Gruffalo, which does the job of scaring them away. But when he comes face to face with the creature from his imagination he is forced to come up with a new plan.

“The Gruffalo” has been appearing in the West End for many years having been adapted from the children’s picture book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The pair have been behind various other hit books, some of which have also made to the stage such as “Room on the Broom”, and these include Gruffalo sequel “The Gruffalo’s Child”, as well as “Tyrannosaurs Drip” and “Taby McTat”.

More recently, however, it has also been announced that another of their creations “Stick Man”, which recently appeared onstage at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, would be appearing at the Leicester Square Theatre this Christmas, giving audiences another chance to pick up Theatre Tickets and witness their work come to life.

“The Gruffalo” makes its latest appearance at the West End with a run at the Lyric Theatre from Wednesday 23rd November 2011 to Sunday 15th January 2012.
