The Umbrellas of Cherbourg Closing Early at the Gielgud Theatre
The Kneehigh Theatre Production with Director Emma Rice Will Close in May 2011
It has been revealed that, despite initially announcing a run that would take it to early October at the Gielgud Theatre, “The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg” will be closing its doors at the end of May. This is a cut of almost four months from its original booking period, with the producers citing financial reasons for the decision. The news comes only one month after the show began previews at its West End home and only two weeks since it began its run proper on the 22nd March.
The show features Joanna Ridings in a lead role, portraying Madame Emery – the mother of the lead character Genevieve Emery – who sells umbrellas on a Normandy coastal town. The seventeen-year-old Genevieve is in love with Guy Fouchier, a twenty-year-old whose life is about to head in a new direction as he is drafted to serve combat in Algeria. But the pair do not want this to stand in the way of their romance and make a vow to remain together in his absence. But Genevieve discovers that she is pregnant and must soon make a decision; stay true to her vow or accept the offers of a wealthy man that can provide for her child.
Joanna Ridings is a familiar face for London theatre audiences that have picked up theatre tickets to witness the show already. The acclaimed actress has appeared in productions such as “Billy Elliot the Musical” at the Victoria Palace Theatre, “Guys and Dolls” at The National Theatre and “The Witches of Eastwick” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. She has also appeared in two productions that have since earned her two Laurence Olivier Awards: “Carousel” and “My Fair Lady” in 1993 and 2003 respectively.
The production is directed by Emma Rice, whose previous work in the capital is “Brief Encounter” at the Haymarket Cinema in 2008, and also stars Meow Meow (from “La Clique” and “La Soiree”), Carly Bawden, Andrew Durand, Cynthia Erivo, Dominic Marsh, Aki Omoshaybi, Laura Brydon and Matt Wilman.
“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” appears at the Gielgud Theatre and, as of Today, is now booking until Saturday 21st May 2011.
