Very Hungry Caterpillar

Christmas might seem like a distant prospect considering the warm weather we’ve had recently, but we’re already learning of some of the seasonal productions set to land in the West End, with the announcement of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show at the Ambassadors Theatre.

The Christmas season never has a shortage of children’s performances, with productions like The Gruffalo, Room On The Broom and The Snowman amongst the shows usually on offer. This year, however, we will also get this adaptation of Eric Carle’s books, with four stories making it onboard.

The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse is one of them, with Mister Seahorse, The Very Lonely Firefly and The Very Hungry Caterpillar also performed. Jonathan Rockefeller has been on adapting duties and he also heads to the Ambassadors Theatre to direct.

“Eric Carle has created a deceptively simple, yet sophisticated introduction to reading through the magic of his iconic collage illustrations and memorable stories,” he said, adding “I still have my original copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and to this day can’t help but be enthralled by the stylish and captivating art in Eric’s work.”

The show will utilise puppeteers to bring the stories to life, with 75 puppets operated over the course of the show.

“When our puppets appear on stage the atmosphere is positively electric - parents and grandparents are swept up in nostalgia, and you can hear peels of laughter and squeals of delight as joy fills the theatre. We can’t wait to bring The Very Hungry Caterpillar to London!”

Rockefeller owns his own production company under the banner of Rockefeller Productions and has previously worked on shows like Thank You For Being A Friend. He has also worked with the writing of The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Eric Carle with the film 10 Little Rubber Ducks, whilst taking The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show to New York as well.
So we already know one of the shows heading to the West End this Christmas for younger audiences. As the year rolls on we will undoubtedly learn more of the other kids shows set to join it.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show is at the Ambassadors Theatre from Friday 2nd December 2016.
