The Birthday Party - Harold Pinter Theatre

It’s been over a decade since we last saw Harold Pinter’s famous play The Birthday Party in the capital but 2018 will bring the production back to the West End on the 60th anniversary of the show’s premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith.

This will be a cause for celebration for many of Pinter’s fans. The acclaimed playwright established himself as one of the biggest names in British theatre for many decades, beginning in the 1950s and continuing right up to his death in 2008. It means that he has been highly influential and his stature is marked not only by regular performances like these but also by the Harold Pinter Theatre, the venue in which the latest revival is staged.

The Birthday Party will also attract some big names when it opens in January, with Toby Jones appearing alongside Zoë Wanamaker and Stephen Mangan.

Ian Rickson directs and in doing so tells a story that focuses on the characters within a boarding house, namely the only resident there – Stanley (Jones) – and the owners Meg (Wanamaker) and Petey Boles. Stanley’s birthday is what leads to the eponymous party and it is there that events are turned upside down, with strangers interrupting the status quo and taking things in a darker direction.

Full details for the remaining cast members will obviously be forthcoming, though the presence of Jones, Wanamaker and Mangan ensures plenty of attention on its own. Add Harold Pinter to the mix and it is certain to be a must-see of early next year.

The show heads to the Harold Pinter Theatre following the upcoming Oslo, which runs from October to December. Oslo focuses the Norwegian diplomats who planned out the Oslo Peace Accords, which were the iconic peace talks between Israel and Palestine in the 1990s.

That production is directed by Bartlett Sher and is scripted by J. T. Rogers, with Pinter’s The Birthday Party marking a change of pace for the venue when the New Year comes along.

The Birthday Party runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre from Thursday 18th January 2018 (previews from Tuesday 9th January 2018) to Saturday 14th April 2018.
