Two New West End Booking Extensions
The Criterion Theatre and the Victoria Palace Theatre have both been the home of The 39 Steps and Billy Elliot The Musical for some time now, so it will come as no surprise that they will both be playing there for some time to come. Both shows have announced booking extensions at the venues and in both cases it means that audiences will be able to buy theatre tickets for performances well into 2014.
The 39 Steps is based both on the John Buchan novel of the same name and the Alfred Hithcock movie adaptation that emerged in the 1930s. It sees the lead character Richard Hannay go on the run after a spy is murdered in his home, leading him to discover the mystery of The 39 Steps and clear his name, with well known set pieces on the Forth Rail Bridge and at the London Palladium.
The show is famous for featuring only four actors who alternate in the extensive roles. The current actors include Adam Jackson-Smith as Richard Hannay alongside Jennifer Bryden, Stephen Critchlow and Andy Williams.
The production is now booking at the Criterion Theatre until Saturday 29th March 2014.
Meanwhile, Billy Elliot The Musical is also based on another text – in this case a 2000 movie – and has been running at the Victoria Palace Theatre since 2005. It tells the story of the eponymous Billy, who pursues his passion for ballet dancing instead of following his father and brothers into the mines and boxing ring. It is set against the backdrop of the 1980s miners strike and has resonated with audiences around the world.
The stage musical version features musical numbers penned by Elton John and a book written by the original movie’s writer Lee Hall. It has earned an array of awards during its run in the capital and has also made an impression on audiences on the other side of the Atlantic thanks to its run at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre from 2008 to 2012.
Billy Elliot The Musical is now booking at the Victoria Palace Theatre until Saturday 21st June 2014.
