Umbrellas of Cherbourg musical to open in West End
Fans of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg musical film will soon have a chance to see the story live on the London stage.
An English language adaptation of the French film is to open at the Gielgud Theatre in the heart of the West End for previews on March 5th 2011.
Based on the Jacques Demy film, the new Kneehigh production has been directed and adapted by Emma Rice.
Noted as being "a French romance that just happens to be sung" by the producers, the musical features songs translated by Sheldon Harnich.
Starring Joanna Riding in the role of Madame Emery and cabaret artist Meow Meow as Lola, the show is scheduled to have its full opening for those with London theatre tickets on March 22nd and run until October 1st.
Based on the 1964 Oscar nominated film, the story focuses on Genevieve Emery, a 17-year-old who discovers she is pregnant with her lover Guy Foucheir's child. However, she must choose to wait for him to return from Algeria or accept the proposal of a wealthy diamond merchant.
