Directions
(5mins) Go right on Long Acre; turn right into Bow Street and after 100 metres turn left (Russell Street) then immediately right onto Catherine Street, where the theatre is located 100 metres down on the corner with Aldwych.
Located close by to the Aldwych Theatre, the Novello Theatre has stood in the West End since 1905, surviving two world wars. Named after the Welsh performer Ivor Novello, the theatre is currently home to Mamma Mia, marking the show’s third West End theatre after the Prince of Wales and the Prince Edward theatres respectively.
Originally named the Waldorf Theatre, it has been called many titles: the Strand, the Whitney and then eventually settled on the Novello in 2005. A Grade II listed building, the Novello Theatre is sure to stand proud in the West End for many years to come.
Audiences have been able to see many shows at the Novello Theatre since its last rename in 2005. Kevin Bacon led the cast in Footloose in 2006 and 2009 saw Spring Awakening and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring James Earl Jones.
In 2012, Mamma Mia made its way to the theatre after 13 years in the West End. At the Novello, it still continues to excite audiences to this day with its feel good soundtrack including “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo”.
