In a provincial Russian town, Varla Kudrjas looks out at the river Volga. When his friend Boris confesses to Varla chat he is secretly in love with Káťa. As the young woman is forced by fate to choose between true love and family honour, will the course of true love run smooth at a tumultuous time?
