Having taken audiences by storm in New York in 2015, the Gershwin musical An American In Paris finally makes its way to the West End, where it will undoubtedly wow audiences as they are taken on an unforgettable journey through post-war Paris in the 1940s. Based on the Gene Kelly film that first entertained crowds in the 1950s, it will introduce a new generation of musical-lovers to the story of Jerry Mulligan and thanks to its success on the other side of the Atlantic, plenty will be curious to see what caused such a stir.
With musical numbers like I’ve Got Beginners Luck, I Got Rhythm and I’ll Build A Stairway To Paradise, amongst others, An American In Paris is one of the most exciting new musicals of the year. It follows the mentioned character of Jerry Mulligan as he finds himself in the vibrant city following the Second World War, where he saw some awful things. He now sets his sights on painting and he delves into Parisian life as the city comes to life, with friendship and romance on the table.
If audiences still need convincing that An American In Paris will provide an unbeatable time in the West End then they only need look at its reputation in the US. It won Tony Awards for Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations and more, with further nominations for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical, amongst others.
For the UK production audiences can also look forward to performances from Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope, the former reprising his role of Jerry Mulligan from the Broadway production. He is a dancer who has made various appearances on Broadway in productions like Romeo + Juliet and the mentioned An American In Paris, which earned him one of the many Tony Award nominations that the show received in 2015.
So look no further than An American In Paris in 2017 as the hit Broadway masterpiece lands at the Dominion Theatre, where it will undoubtedly put a smile on the faces of fans across the capital. It opens at the West End venue on Saturday 1st April 2017 (previews from Saturday 4th March 2017).
