Every year brings us so many new musicals but every so often it’s only right that we spend some time with our classic favourites and with that in mind one of the most welcome shows is Annie at the Piccadilly Theatre. Not only does the show see the world’s most famous orphan return to the stage, but it also offers us a well known television personality in the role of Miss Hannigan, making this one of the year’s must-see shows.
After all, we’ve seen Craig Revel Horwood on television screens on many occasions over the years, especially in his role as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing, but now we can see him in a West End show. So as he takes on the role of the Wicked orphanage owner theatregoers are bound to pay attention.
This production of Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan’s musical returns us to that iconic location of New York in the 1930s. It is a time of great desperation and this definitely applies to our hero Annie as she is orphaned and spending time at Miss Hannigan’s institution. But whilst her biggest dream is to find her real family she is going to have the Christmas of a lifetime when she is invited to spend time with the billionaire Oliver Warbucks. It could be an opportunity to turn her life around, putting the horrors of the orphanage behind her and looking at tomorrow with a smile…as long as Miss Hannigan doesn’t ruin it!
Add to that story some musical numbers that have thrilled audiences for decades, like Hard Knock Life and others, and you have the makings of one of the most renowned musicals of all time.
Craig Revel Horwood replaces Miranda Hart in the role of Miss Hannigan, with the well known comedian forced to step down due to a throat infection, but he will bring his own spin to an iconic role. Though best known for his work on Strictly, he has also choreographed a range of West End and regional shows, including Sunset Boulevard at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre) and Chess on a UK tour.
So make sure you catch Annie The Musical as it continues its run at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre.
