Audiences will spend some time in the countryside during a tumultuous birthday celebration this July as Alexi Kaye Campbell’s Apologia makes its way to the Trafalgar Studios.

The production boasts a celebrated script, which has won over audiences since it was first staged in 2009, and a stellar cast working under the direction of Jamie Lloyd. It will be the latest occasion in which the work of Lloyd has been seen at the Whitehall venue following his Trafalgar Transformed seasons, which have played at the location in recent years.

Stockard Channing plays Kristin Miller in Apologia and we follow her as she spends times with those close to her during birthday celebrations at her countryside home. However, what could have been a happy occasion becomes embroiled in tension as Miller recently published a memoir with some particular details that will bring people head to head. As a result, this birthday gathering becomes an occasion for self-reflection and the facing of events from the past head on.

Apologia emerged in 2009 when it was staged at the Bush Theatre in London and followed up Campbell’s previous plays Death In Whitbridge and The Pride, the latter of which was seen at the Royal Court and on the other side of the Atlantic, whilst winning a Laurence Olivier Award. Since then he has also been behind shows like The Faith Machine, Bracken Moor and Sunset At The Villa Thalia, in addition to the film Woman In Gold.

So Apologia is one of many big shows for the acclaimed writer and his work requires a skilled hand to do it justice. This is where Jamie Lloyd comes in; he has been behind the successful Trafalgar Transformed seasons for the venue, which saw productions like The Hothouse, Macbeth, The Ruling Class and The Homecoming appear, as well as Campbell’s earlier hit The Pride. He is undoubtedly one of the capital’s most renowned directors.

So with a wonderful script, a skilled director and a recognisable star in Stockard Channing, Apologia presents another big reason to head to the Trafalgar Studios as it follows up previous hit shows like Buried Child and The Philanthropist in 2017.

Apologia runs at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Saturday 29th July 2017.
