Over the years the Menier Chocolate Factory has staged some stand-out shows that have enjoyed great success, making it one of the most exciting venues outside of the West End.

This is proven once again with this revival of the classic musical Barnum, chronicling the work of circus pioneer P. T. Barnum, which plays at the Southwark venue in 2018. Mixing a heartwarming story with some memorable songs and circus spectacle, it has proven popular ever since it was first seen on Broadway and in the West End in the early 1980s and now finds a new generation of admirers.

Mark Bramble, Michael Stewart and Cy Coleman’s musical is directed at the Menier Chocolate Factory by Gordon Greenberg, with an impressive cast taking on real life names. Marcus Brigstocke is the titular Barnum and he appears alongside co-stars Laura Pitt-Pulford, Celinde Schoenmaker, Tupele Dorgu and Harry Francis, to name but a few. Thanks to previous credits some of these will be familiar names to legions of London theatregoers.

Together they recreate the world of P. T. Barnum, the circus pioneer who showcased the entertainment form across the United States in the latter half of the 19th century. The company he created managed to transcend even his own death in 1891, combining with another company shortly afterwards to form Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus, which only stopped operating in 2017.

The musical features an array of hummable songs throughout its runtime as the spectacle of Barnum’s life is portrayed. They include the likes of The Colors Of My Life, Thank God I’m Old, Come Follow The Band, Bigger Isn’t Better, Love Makes Such Fools Of Us All, and Join The Circus, amongst others.

So audiences in for a wild ride at the Menier Chocolate Factory thanks to the enduring legacy of P. T. Barnum. It will ensure that nearly 40 years since the show first premiered there will always be fans of its awe-inspiring spectacle. Now a new generation can get a look-in, ensuring its legacy further in the decades ahead.

Barnum makes a welcome return to the capital and continues its run at the Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark in 2018.
