Caroline, or Change

Important Info: Sharon D Clarke will no longer be performing in Caroline, or Change on Mondays. Audio Described performance: Tuesday 26th February 19.30

In recent years, musicals written by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori have made their mark in the West End, including Fun Home and Shrek The Musical. However, their musical storytelling of life in the American south during the 1960’s in Caroline, or Change has become one of the hottest shows to see in town. Blending many music styles including Motown, classical and folk music, it’s a powerful musical which will leave you thinking, but ultimately wanting more. So, if you’re looking to learn about the past as it’s told through a compelling soundtrack, you’ll want to book your tickets for Caroline, or Change.

Walking into the Playhouse Theatre, you’ll see a large Confederate statue standing centre stage which sets the atmosphere for the entire story; conflict between different races and opinions in a politically charged time in American history. As the musical opens, audiences meet Caroline Thibodeaux, an African-American maid working for a Jewish family in Louisiana.

Singing with washers, dryers and the radio, Caroline tries to make a better life for herself. But when she’s told by the family that she can take spare change, Caroline lets greed get the better of her as she feels pressured to steal money from one child to give to her own. Feeling down, Caroline must navigate the trouble of earning enough money to support her family, while making sure she doesn’t anger anyone.

Caroline, or Change was first performed in London in 2006, with the National Theatre production going on to win best new musical at the 2007 Olivier Awards against Avenue Q and Spamalot. This recent revival comes to the West End after a critically-acclaimed run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, later transferring to the Hampstead Theatre and now takes residency in the West End. If you’re looking for a gripping story to draw you in, then Caroline, or Change is guaranteed to hold your attention in an unforgettable musical extravaganza.
