Caroline, or Change

Writer Tony Kushner has had a successful career, penning many acclaimed works for the stage and screen over the years, winning awards in the process. From the film Lincoln to the Pulitzer-Prize winning Angels In America: A Gay Fantasia On National Themes, he has become influential voice.

Another of his pieces was the musical Caroline, Or Change, which first appeared in the early 1990s and was successfully premiered on Broadway in 2003. That musical, which is a semi-autobiographical story, has earned many admirers over the years and added to Kushner’s reputation as an important and talented writer.

Caroline, Or Change was first seen by London audiences when it was staged at the National Theatre in 2006 and its success means that its return to the public consciousness in 2018 has already drawn a lot of attention. Its run at the Chichester Festival Theatre led to its transfer to London and now it is the turn of West End audiences to experience a gripping story led by one of the capital’s most admired performers.

That performer is Sharon D Clarke, who plays the title role in the show as it makes its way to the Playhouse Theatre. The year is 1963 and the location is Lake Charles, Louisiana, with Caroline an African American maid working for the Gellman family, which includes the eight-year-old Noah. The young boy is reeling from the death of his mother and his father’s new partnership, so seeks solace in Caroline, who faces a moral and legal financial quandary as the story progresses.

The score of the musical includes a range of songs that mix various styles, from Motown to folk music, and the mix of these songs from Jeanine Tesori and Kushner’s compelling story has provided it with widespread admiration. This is reflected in its various awards (including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2007) and the attention it has received from its Chichester and Hampstead Theatre appearances.

It also helps that the show has a director with the experience of Michael Longhurst, whose career has seen him helm shows at venues like the Donmar Warehouse, the National Theatre and the Almeida Theatre, amongst others. His credits at those locations include Belleville, Amadeus and They Drink It In The Cargo, respectively.

Caroline, Or Change heads to the Playhouse Theatre in 2018, following on from shows such as The Jungle and The Best Man, with a run beginning on Tuesday 20th November 2018.
