Company

Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical Company already has legions of fans around the world and one only has to look at the success it has earned since its debut nearly 50 years ago to understand that its return to the capital is always going to be met with great anticipation.

From Tony Awards to regular revivals, Company has gone from strength to strength, but for the latest version headed to the West End things are going to be turned upside down.

Sondheim’s musical about a single man, afraid of commitment, and his relationships with a range of married couples will have a gender reversal so that the main character of Bobby becomes Bobbi, with the acclaimed actress Rosalie Craig taking on the iconic part.

But that’s not all. Company will also star Patti LuPone in the role of Joanne, meaning that a Broadway icon will be treading the boards of the Gielgud Theatre when the show opens its doors in 2018. It won’t be the first time that LuPone has been seen on a West End stage but it is still an unbeatable opportunity to witness a true star in Theatreland.

The show is portrayed as a series of vignettes, with Bobbi’s relationship with five married couples explored through separate little episodes, subsequently amplified by the presence of some celebrated musical numbers. In 1970 those numbers included title track Company, as well as Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch, Being Alive, Someone Is Waiting and The Little Things You Do Together, amongst many others.

This new production is a presentation of Elliot Harper Productions, who are already hard at work with 2017’s Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle at the Wyndham’s Theatre and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. This company is a new pairing between Marianne Elliot, the acclaimed director of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and Chris Harper, producer of One Man, Two Guvnors at the National Theatre.

Company had it first London run at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1972, two years after the original Broadway run, and has since been staged at the Albery Theatre (now the Noël Coward Theatre) in 1995.

Company runs at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End from Wednesday 26th September 2018.
