As part of a stand-out season of shows that celebrates Rome at the Barbican, Coriolanus returns to a London stage ready to showcase one of Shakespeare’s classic stories in front of the latest generation of theatregoers. Sope Dirisu takes up the mantle of the title role and, like this season’s production of Julius Caesar, the show will be directed by Angus Jackson.

The Rome MMXVII Season marks a fantastic time to witness some of Shakespeare’s finest work, exploring the Roman Empire in a way that has shaped popular culture and the world’s perception of the civilisation for centuries after the plays were penned. In addition to Coriolanus, the season also sees productions of Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus take to the stage.

The tale is based on the real life figure of Caius Marcius Coriolanus, who lived in the 5th century BC and was celebrated as a successful soldier with a reputation that brought him great admiration until he was exiled. Shakespeare’s take is one of tragedy, focusing on his reluctant rise to power and his subsequent downfall after failing to find the right allies.

It was penned in the early 17th century and has stood the test of time since that day to become one of Shakespeare’s classics and popularising the life of Coriolanus for generations to come. It has been staged worldwide and has also been adapted into other plays and for the screen, perhaps most famously in Ralph Fiennes’ 2011 film.

And now it returns to a London stage under the direction of Angus Jackson as part of the Rome MMXVII Season where it plays alongside a host of stand-out shows. It opens on Monday 6th November 2017.
