Don Quixote

When it comes to famous literary figures there are many iconic names that come to mind, from Shakespeare to Moliere and from Beckett to Dickens, but one of the most influential must be Miguel de Cervantes, author of the iconic Don Quixote. His work has inspired countless others over the centuries and his classic story attracts new fans each passing year, despite the four centuries that have passed since its completion.

With that in mind it is no wonder audiences flocked to the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon to witness this stage adaptation of his classic Don Quixote, with David Threlfall in the title role and Rufus Hound as his sidekick Sancho Panza. It wowed audiences and critics alike with its mixture of great performances and live music, making a West End transfer inevitable.

And here it is! Don Quixote now makes its way to the Garrick Theatre in London, where theatregoers in Theatreland can no experience the tale of Alonso Quixano as he emulates his literary heroes in medieval Spain. Quixano has romantic notions of heroism and embarks on a journey alongside the farmer Sancho Panza, righting wrongs and turning the tides, all under the heroic name of Don Quixote.

The comic classic has been a staple of literature since the early 17th century, giving it four centuries to grow in the public consciousness and maintain its place as an important piece even today in the 21st century.

And this is reflected in the star power driving the production in 2018, with David Threlfall and Rufus Hound embarking on the Spanish adventure. Both are known for television work and a range of stage credits, ensuring further attention for a title that needs little introduction. Threlfall, for example, is best known for the role of Frank Gallagher in Shameless, but has also appeared in Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me at the Ambassadors Theatre, Skellig at the Young Vic, Blue/Orange at the Duchess Theatre and Tartuffe at the National Theatre, amongst a host of others.

So expect big things as Don Quixote replaces outgoing shows like Young Frankenstein when it opens at the Garrick Theatre on Thursday 8th November 2018 (previews from Saturday 27th October 2018).
