Everybody's Talking About Jamie

Learn why Everybody’s Talking About Jamie as the new musical from Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae makes its way to the West End.

Having premiered in Sheffield earlier in the year, the show now lands in the capital where it will showcase a sixteen-year-old boy struggling to grow up in a world that might not understand the way he views himself.

It being a musical production, we also hear a range of shows penned by Dan Gillespie Sells. He is best known for his work with the band The Feeling, with whom he has released a range of popular albums.

Writer Tom MacRae, meanwhile, is best known for contributing scripts to television. He has accumulated a wealth of credits for some of TV’s best loved shows, including various episodes of Doctor Who in 2006 and 2011, plus Marple, Casualty and Off Limits: Schools Out, amongst others.

For Everybody’s Talking About Jamie he utilises a BBC Three documentary called Jamie: Drag Queen At 16 as a jumping-off point. That show was first seen on television screens back in 2011 and focused on Jamie Campbell and his supportive mum, with this musical version transforming the character into Jamie New. Considering the positive reviews, Sells, MacRae and Jonathan Buterrell (who came up with the original idea) have landed on musical theatre gold.

And playing Jamie is John McCrea, a performer who is accumulating some impressive theatre credits. He played the part of Jamie in this show when it was staged in Sheffield and also appeared in The Busker’s Opera at the Park Theatre, North London.

For this new musical, however, he stars alongside Daniel Anthony, Mina Anwar, Luke Baker, Courtney Bowman, Tamsin Carroll, James Gillian, Harriet Payne, Shiv Rabheru, Lucie Shorthouse, Kirstie Skivington and Josie Walker as Jamie’s mother, Margaret.

So in a year that brings a lot of new musicals to the capital, including the likes of Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is sure to make a big impression as well.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie runs at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End from Wednesday 22nd November 2017 (previews from Monday 6th November 2017).
