Latest Review: "A mixed cast While the staging was excellent and very inventive I felt the performance ..."

Every so often, one of the great musicals is staged in the West End, attracting audiences from far and wide. Alongside new productions of Waitress and 9 to 5, Theatreland will also be filled with the sounds of an older musical score at Fiddler on the Roof, coming to the Playhouse Theatre in 2019. Selling out performances at the Menier Chocolate Factory and transforming the theatre into an immersive space, now’s your chance to see Tevye, Golde and the rest of the Russian community in this foot-stomping, heart-racing production. So, if you want to see a show transferring into the West End, make it your new “Tradition” to see Fiddler on the Roof.

At the start of the show, you’ll be welcomed into the small Russian town of Anatevka and their Jewish community. In the first few minutes, you’ll learn all about the community and what happens in their daily lives, especially Tevye, Golde and their five children. As their eldest child Tzeitel wants to marry a young man named Motel, word is told by a match maker that somebody else wants to marry her. Eventually, the pair are able to marry after considerable trouble in doing so, but when the Russians storm into the wedding ceremony, it’s made apparent that the Russians and Jews aren’t the same. With sunrises turning into sunset, see how Anatevka becomes more than just the hometown for the Jewish community, as characters sing songs “If I Were a Rich Man” and a jaw-dropping “Bottle Dance”.

Fiddler on the Roof was last performed in the West End in 1983, playing at the Apollo Victoria and the London Palladium. Prior to the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production, it was last seen in 2007 and starred Henry Goodman, Beverley Klein and Victor McGuire. Feel the winds of change at this West End revival of an old classic, with this rousing production set to stun audiences at the Playhouse Theatre.
