The presence of Imelda Staunton in the 2017 production of Follies captured The Audience’s hearts. So much so, Staunton went on to be nominated for an Olivier award for her performance, with the production scooping up the 2017 Olivier award for best musical revival. Back by popular demand, Follies will return to the National Theatre, giving theatregoers another chance to experience the pure magic of the show with all its glitz, glamour and sophistication in tow. So, if you want to see a classic musical that’s being revived for a limited engagement, now is the time to book tickets for Follies.
The story follows different couples who were previously a part of a musical revue called the Weismann’s Follies as they reunite at an old Broadway Theatre in the early 1970s. Enjoying one last hurrah in the crumbling theatre around them, see the trips down memory lane unfold with their relationships explored and their dancing days behind them. While the old Follies may not be at the prime of their career, it’s the time for the performers to enjoy a party and say their goodbyes. They will enjoy one last party there before the venue is torn down and during the course of the show we will explore the relationships and the trips down memory lane.
Sondheim’s classic was first seen on Broadway in 1971 and has been seen around the world, leading to the successful revival at the National Theatre in 2017. The show managed to introduce a new generation of theatregoers to something that has inspired and influenced in the years since it was first seen. With a memorable story and toe-tapping songs, see a Stephen Sondheim classic brought to life at Follies, attracting audiences from all over the world.
The cast for Follies includes Lindsay Atherton and Geraldine Fitzgerald.
Some of the biggest songs in Follies include “Losing My Mind” and “You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow”.
Follies was first performed on Broadway in 1971.
