The Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was the subject of a concept album by Anaïs Mitchell earlier in the decade, taking the story and giving it a musical spin.

Fast forward to 2016 and audiences in the United States sat down to witness a new stage musical, one that took the concept album and Greek myth and gave it a whole new lease of life. That production was called Hadestown and that now makes its way to London, with a run at the Olivier National Theatre from November that will give a unique spin on a familiar story.

Rachel Chavkin, the show’s director, has worked with Anaïs Mitchell to bring this to fruition and judging by the award-nominations it has earned it has already managed to turn some heads.

This version of the story sees Orpheus and Eurydice working on music and their relationship blossoming, only for this to become undone. Soon, Orpheus must head into the underworld of Hadestown to rescue Eurydice from temptation.

The production first appeared in New York in 2016 under the direction of one of the show’s creators Rachel Chavkin and it is her vision that remains intact for this London run. Chavkin is an award-winning director who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2017 for her work on Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812, which appeared off-Broadway in 2013 and on Broadway in 2016. Her work includes a range of shows on the other side of the Atlantic, including The Royale and Three Pianos.

So her work will have a fitting home in the capital when Hadestown runs at the Olivier National Theatre from Friday 2nd November 2018.
