It isn’t unusual for top new musicals to emerge that take their cues from a high profile film, whether it is the ongoing shows Aladdin and School Of Rock or past hits like Billy Elliot The Musical. It demonstrates that whilst there is an appetite for these kinds of productions, there is also plenty of material to mine into the next stage hit.

The next one on the list is Heathers: The Musical, based on the classic 80s film of the same name, which played at The Other Palace during the summer of 2018 with Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy providing the book and music, and Andy Fickman directing.

That production has now been given a West End transfer, playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from September and undoubtedly ensuring this becomes one of the year’s must-see shows in Theatreland.

The darkly comic Heathers originally starred Christian Slater and Winona Ryder on the big screen, with Carrie Hope Fletcher playing Ryder’s role of Veronica Sawyer at The Other Palace at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Her character meets the bad boy sociopath J.D. and together they come up with a horrifying plan to destroy the clique that has already tried to destroy her.

Along the way audiences can expect some top songs to propel the narrative along, with Carrie Hope Fletcher providing the kind of stand-out performance that she has nurtured through her myriad credits in top West End shows.

Though Heathers was not a huge success when the film was first released in 1988 it has become a cult classic in the years since. Michael Lehmann directed the film from Daniel Waters’ script and it has fans around the world, who have flocked to The Other Palace and will now do the same when Heathers: The Musical opens at its new home.

Following its successful run at The Other Palace, Heather: The Musical now runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Monday 3rd September 2018. It is part of a busy year for the venue, which also welcomes Tartuffe, Broken Wings and The Band before the 2018 is complete.
