Latest Review: "Fabulous performance by a very talented artist. For me very emotional as with a lot of other people ..."

The latest production headed to the Wyndham’s Theatre invites audiences to step back in time to attend a small gig by legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday. The year is 1959 and the location is Philadelphia, with Holliday making one of her final appearances.

The real event took place almost 60 years ago now, but Audra McDonald will step into Holliday’s shoes to recreate the night for audiences in the West End. The result is a play that has wowed audiences on the other side of the Atlantic, earned a Tony Award for its lead star and ensured a great night for theatregoers here in the capital.

There is no doubt that this will be a unique showcase of Audra McDonald’s talents, with West End theatregoers ready to see a performance that earned her the 2014 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play. They will be eager to see her take to the stage and they will also relish in hearing some toe-tapping songs delivered live.

Billie Holiday made her biggest mark on audiences in the middle of the 20th century, with her career blossoming in the period between the 1930s and 1950s. For Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill, however, we catch up with her during one of her final performances. During the course of the evening we witness as McDonald returns her to the stage, singing some memorable songs and recounting stories from her life. It will be an unforgettable experience.

And with that in mind it is easy to see why producers called upon an equally talented performer to take on the real life role. After all, not only has Audra McDonald already won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Holliday, she has also earned various other awards for previous roles as well. Her credits include Broadway productions of Henry IV and Porgy & Bess, in addition to a wealth of television and film parts.

So she has plenty of experience so that she can transport audiences back to 1959 and provide them with a unique and immersive experience.

Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from  Tuesday 27th June 2017 (previews from Saturday 17th June 2017).
