Merrily We Roll Along

The Menier Chocolate Factory remains one of the best places to witness high quality musicals outside of the West End and this is proven with the transfer of one of its 2012 hit. Merrily We Roll Along now runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre with actors Jenna Russell, Damian Humbley and Mark Umbers in lead roles. It will be a chance for audiences to pick up theatre tickets to witness a Stephen Sondheim favourite as it returns to the stage for the latest occasion since its unveiling in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, all eyes have been firmly on the production as it is directed by the legendary Maria Friedman, a multi-Olivier Award-winning actress whose work has been seen all over the capital.

Merrily We Roll Along deals with a very common topic – the film industry – which is also the focus of musicals like Singin’ In The Rain. In this case, it is a Broadway composer who is making his mark on Hollywood, having decided to chase new work in LA. But in doing so he turns his back on his family and friends. The work started as a play in the 1930s, until Sondheim came along to produce the 1981 musical with songs like Old Friend, It’s A Hit, Now You Know and Not A Day Goes By, among others.

Actress Jenna Russell is a London stage regular and so audiences headed to the Harold Pinter Theatre will undoubtedly recognise her from a wide range of roles. Perhaps her best known part in recent years was Dot in both the London and New York versions of Sunday In the Park With George, which led to her receiving a lot of awards recognition in 2006. She has also appeared in Into The Woods at the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, Soho Cinders at the Soho Theatre and television shows like Doctor Who. So she has plenty of experience to ensure Merrily We Roll Along remains a stand-out production during its run in the West End.

Following its Menier Chocolate Factory run Merrily We Roll Along opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre from Wednesday 1st May 2013 (previews from Tuesday 23rd April 2013) and continue into the summer.
