Over the years the West End has welcomed an array of shows that have their origins on the big screen, whether it is the long-running The Lion King or hit shows like Billy Elliot The Musical.

For the latest show headed to the Piccadilly Theatre, however, we turn our attentions to a story that was originally conceived for the stage before the film production launched the career of one of the world’s best known directors – Baz Lurhmann.

That show is Strictly Ballroom and audiences will be able to enjoy this wonderful stage musical version of the iconic film from March 2018, with Drew McOnie providing his signature blend of direction and choreography.

The film was released in cinemas back in 1992 and for many productions that would be the end of the story, but a fast-forward to 2014 demonstrated its lasting impression as the new stage musical version was launched in Sydney. It means that, as we now fast-forward to 2018, audiences still can’t get enough of this memorable story.

Strictly Ballroom tells a tale that is ripe for the stage treatment. It focuses on the character of Scott, an Australian ballroom dancer who has a renegade attitude to the art form and as he teams up with Fran to win a competition, he is placed at odds with those around him as he seeks success and love.

And along the way we will also hear some high profile songs, which will propel audiences back in time for a nostalgic trip through the 1980s and 1990s as some familiar numbers light up the stage.

The result is bound to be one of the musical events of the year as Baz Lurhmann’s Strictly Ballroom joins the likes of School Of Rock, Aladdin and Made In Dagenham as it becomes a top new West End show. With some memorable songs, a compelling story and wonderful direction and choreography from Drew McOnie, audiences will get everything they need from this must-see musical in 2018!

Strictly Ballroom is set to entertain audiences when it opens at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre on Wednesday 11th April 2018 (previews from Friday 16th March 2018).
