Tess of the d'Urbervilles

When Tess Of The d’Urbervilles was first published back in the 1890s, few could have predicted its longevity in the public consciousness. Thomas Hardy’s iconic book has had quite the journey across the 20th century and into the current one, beginning with mixed reviews and progressing to its positive re-evaluations in the minds of audiences.

It helps that it has been staged on numerous occasions as well, first adapted in the 19th century and subsequently re-adapted in the years since. One of the most recent is this musical version from the Youth Music Theatre, which now comes to The Other Palace under the direction of Gerry Flanagan, the show’s writer.

The show introduces us to Tess Durbeyfield in a small country village and we witness as a dark and tragic love story takes place amongst characters like her, Alec and Angel.

The novel’s original title was Tess Of The d’Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented and was one of many books from the famous Thomas Hardy, whose legacy is also cemented by Far From The Madding Crowd.

And that legacy means that it is no wonder that the Youth Music Theatre has chosen his work for the musical theatre treatment, with Pippa Cleary providing music and lyrics to Gerry Flanagan’s book. It will make for a unique and memorable celebration of an iconic piece of literature.

Tess Of The d’Urbervilles runs at The Other Palace from Thursday 5th April 2018.
