Audiences already have a lot of options when it comes to stand-out musicals, with some shows based on some classic texts, but the latest show headed to the Trafalgar Studios has a particularly impressive background.

This is because West End is going to have another musical plucked from the pages of a Victor Hugo novel from December with The Grinning Man making the journey from the Bristol Old Vic to the Trafalgar Studios.

Based on Hugo’s 1869 novel The Man Who Laughs, The Grinning Man will provide the West End with another high profile production, boasting some impressive visuals and memorable performances.

Hugo, of course, is best known for penning the novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, but The Man Who Laughs has its admirers as well, which is reflected in the myriad adaptations that have appeared across the last century and a half, with big screen and stage versions entertaining crowds over the decades. As such The Grinning Man is the latest in a long line of interpretations of the classic, but this will utilise puppetry and unique stage designs to really bring it to life.

The main character in The Grinning Man is Grinpayne (based on The Man Who Laughs’ Gwynplaine) and he is a disfigured man who hides his scarred mouth behind bandages and becomes a sensation when he arrives at the Stokes Croft fair. With his perpetual grin he takes the community by storm and during the course of the tale he teams with an array of other colourful and memorable characters.

An impressive group of people put The Grinning Man together in the West End. Not only does it boast a director in War Horse’s Tom Morris, but also a musical book by Carl Grose. Meanwhile, performances come from Louis Maskell and Julian Bleach, amongst others, and they bring a wealth of experience to their roles.

Louis Maskell, for example, appeared in the show in Bristol and has also appeared in a range of productions around the country, including touring versions of hits like West Side Story and Scrooge.

But now he heads to the Trafalgar Studios 1 as he appears in The Grinning Man, which runs at the venue from Monday 18th December 2017 (with previews from Tuesday 5th December 2017).
