The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole

Age Restriction: Suitable for ages 12+

Sue Townsend’s famous Adrian Mole character makes his way to the capital this summer as the musical adaptation of her popular book The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ plays at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The story has been a favourite of many since the 1980s and was adapted into a West End show at that time, but this version headed to the capital in 2017 is a new musical version from Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary, which already wowed crowds in Leicester and now sets its sights on the Southwark venue.

So a trip to the Menier Chocolate Factory will mean a trip back to the early 1980s when this tale opens its doors in July. It is in that era that we see the world through the eyes of the titular Adrian Mole, a teenage boy who is going through all of the ups and downs of adolescence, with bullies, grown-ups and unrequited love all taking their toll. Meanwhile, we also gain glimpses at some of the biggest events of the decade, particularly those related to Margaret Thatcher.

This being a musical the story will also be amplified by some stand-out songs that will give this a memorable edge and ensure it stays in the minds of audiences for years to come.

The production’s creators, Jake Brunger and Pippa Cleary, have taken Sue Townsend’s classic book and delivered the latest in a long line of acclaimed musicals that they have to their names. Since The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ was first seen in 2015 they have also presented musicals of Treasure Island and Red Riding Hood, whilst their earlier career included releases like The Snow Gorilla and The Great British Soap Opera.

But now it is the turn of The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ to place them in the spotlight at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The venue is one of the most exciting places to witness live theatre outside of the West End and regularly presents shows that go on to have major West End success.

The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ - directed by Luke Sheppard - is at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Wednesday 26th July 2017 (previews from Friday 14th July 2017).
