First performed in 1967, Peter Nicholl’s A Day in the Death of Joe Egg will return to the West End in September 2019. As a couple decide what’s best for their severely disabled daughter, the show asks questions about the impact a disability can have on those suffering with a condition, as well as immediate family and friends. Based on Nicholl’s first-hand experiences of raising a disabled child, it’s a brutally honest play that’s guaranteed to be poignant and comedic. So, if you’re looking to see a West End revival with a star cast, you’ll want to see A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

A middle-aged couple, Bri and Sheila’s lives changed the day their daughter Josephine was born. Living with cerebral palsy, Josephine (nicknamed Joe Egg by her parents) is unable to communicate, move or function by herself. Now ten years old, their daughter’s condition has caused a rift to grow between the couple, using humours as their coping mechanism for their daily reality. As the pair differ on the future for their child, join the couple in a play that explores what it means to be disabled and how disabilities can impact family life.

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg isn’t the only West End revival taking place this year. Last starring in Joe Egg in 2001, see Clive Owen back in the West End in The Night of the Iguana at the Noel Coward Theatre. Or, head to the National Theatre to see an Ibsen classic reinvented for the 21st century at Peter Gynt. But, if you’re looking for honest conversations told on stage, you’ll want to see A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.
