Sally Cookson, having already helmed some of the most beloved family shows in recent years, returns to direct A Monster Calls at the Old Vic Theatre during the summer of 2018. In doing so she brings new life to the novel by Patrick Ness and takes audiences on a heartwarming and eye opening tale that embarks on an emotional journey.

It arrives in a year that brings a host of other shows to the prestigious London venue, from Mood Music to Sylvia, and puts it at the forefront of the London theatre’s 2018 offerings.

First released in 2011, Patrick Ness’s novel A Monster Calls has become a firm favourite of audiences around the world, leading not only to this stage adaptation but a high profile film that was released in 2016. Its arrival on the stage of the Old Vic Theatre is, therefore, the latest step in an impressive journey for a story that has resonated with those that have read it.

The story focuses on the character of Conor, a young teenager and his heartbreaking life at home, where he must face the realities of his mother’s terminal illness. It is difficult for him to deal with the issue and he finds respite in an unlikely place – a monster that visits him in the middle of the night and tells stories.

Regarded by many as the best novel of 2011, A Monster Calls requires a talented eye to bring it to the stage and they have found this eye with the renowned Sally Cookson, whose credits prior to helming this have been other family shows. The Artistic Director of the Bristol Old Vic is best known in London for productions like Hetty Feather at the Duke of York’s Theatre, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt at the Lyric Theatre and Stick Man at the Leicester Square Theatre, amongst others.

A Monster Calls runs at London’s Old Vic Theatre from Saturday 7th July 2018.
