This summer the Harold Pinter Theatre will have a change of pace following the appearances of high profile shows like The Birthday Party and Cirque Berserk. This is because Nina Raine’s new play, Consent, will make a welcome appearance through the warmer months and provide a compelling narrative driven by performances from Claudie Blakley and Stephen Campbell Moore, amongst others.

Roger Michell directs the production in the West End, having previously done so at the Dorfman National Theatre, and in doing so tackles a complex subject matter that has been in the news a lot in recent years due to Hollywood and political scandals. The result has been a celebrated play at the South Bank venue, providing a powerful and, at times, funny, narrative that has stayed with audiences long after the final curtain call.

The story centres on two friends and a controversial rape case. These characters – Edward and Tim – are barristers and they are on opposing sides of the trial and soon their views on the matter start to have an effect on the world around them. We explore their relationship with one another and their relationships with others, deconstructing their arguments and worldviews and leaving behind a powerful impression.

Writer Nina Raine is no stranger to powerful narratives, having written and directed many over the years. Her previous writing credits include the popular Tribes, which appeared at the Royal Court Theatre (also directed by Roger Michell) and Rabbit at the Trafalgar Studios. As a director she has also brought many famous works to the stage and as a result she has become a significant voice in the London theatre scene.

Such a reputation has ensured a stellar cast as Consent heads to the West End, with Claudie Blakley known for a range of roles in the capital and on the screen, from The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre to The Painkiller at the Garrick Theatre. Audiences might also recognise her from television shows like Silent Witness and New Tricks, amongst others.

In addition to Blakley and Stephen Campbell Moore, the cast will also include Adam James and Heather Craney.

Consent heads to the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End, with performances beginning on Tuesday 29th May 2018 (previews from Friday 18th May 2018).
